If you don't live in a hole in the ground (after reading this you might think that is where we should live), you've probably seen coverage of a couple storms that have rumbled through the 'flatland' as a friend calls it. Well, we to date have been spared, but that is not the case for many in the state.

Two weeks ago on May 10th, a major tornado outbreak hit the state and what local meteorologists called the 2nd worst outbreak in state history, over 21 tornadoes wiped out countless homes, cars and other property and took the lives of at least 11. The 3rd tornado of the 21 actually briefly came through the west side of Yukon, but we were 4 miles east. Image 3 (which is on the left as well) in the link shows this storm, which was one of the smaller that day.

3 days ago on Sunday, just after lunch, a major storm again moved through central OK. It started out with small tornadoes before coming into the city, but what followed was probably worse and more wide-spread than a small tornado.

Softball and in some cases volleyball size hail covered a stretch of Northwest OKC 3-6 miles wide and 15-20 miles long. Again, this was 5 miles north of us and we were spared. My brother and sister-in-law were eating at a restaurant and lost their windshield. we have friends whose entire shingles were beat off, and all the windows in houses were knocked out.

Tonight, another tornado outbreak just happened, but again, we are blessed. It didn't even rain in Yukon, but 20 miles south and 20 miles north at least 12 tornadoes have touched down. (at present time they have moved to the eastern part of the state and are still going strong).

All this to say, the power in a storm is amazing. I told Tara countless times I missed the storms of OK. Well I'm getting my fill. I don't like what they leave behind but there is nothing quite like seeing the awesome power of the weather in OK. It gives a new perspective to humans and our 'creations'. I always think about the wildlife (cattle/horses/deer,etc) when hail like that is falling.

If you've never experienced this please come visit for a week in May. This is a must because really there is something eerily peaceful before and after the storm. I've contemplated the premise much in my work with college students, and seeing 'storms' play out in real lives often mirrors what storms are like in real life. They come and go, often unpredicted, but the cleanup shows the good in humanity. Churches, communities, and local organizations always rally around those who've lost everything and the common good is refreshing. In a time when everyone seems to be mad at everyone, it takes storms to bring us together. Is this a good thing, I don't know. But like nature, it is a necessity.

We are blessed indeed to have a roof that protects us and and shelter from the storm.

May brought a milestone for Tara and I. Ten years ago in Pomona, CA we got hitched. Life has been wonderful and we have had many adventures. I came up with a 'count down' to chronicle the first decade. Enjoy!

I Think I Will Try Out the "Blogging Thing"

I know I'm a few years behind the 'Techno-world', but I'm going to give this blog thing a spin for a while. I think I want to chronicle the fam and other musings...first let's start with a few updates...mava! :)

The boys are growing up. Caleb turned four a week ago. He is finishing up his first year of preschool, which he LOVES. He got a bike from Grandma and Grandpa Mize for his special day and we take daily bike rides around the block now (with only a few accidents to date). He got a fishing pole from Grandma and Grandpa Houston and is

asking daily when we will go fishing (which will hopefully be catching :).

Nathan, is 17 months old and full of energy. He has been so mobile for so

long. He climbs, runs, dribbles anything resembling a ball, and calls everything Ba, Ball, BAAA, etc. They are so fun watching play together, finally :).

There are many new pics uploaded from the past three weeks. Tara's parents were here for a week and a half and we had a wonderful time. They got to celebrate Easter with the boys, Caleb's B-day and both boys dedication at church.

We all are glad that spring is finally here and look forward to much more outdoors without gloves, hats and scarves!

Houston's in Snow

This winter has been crazy! I've already talked about the Christmas blizzard and pics are at Flickr, but then two weeks ago we got another major Ice/Snow storm. SNU was closed for two days and local schools up to 5 days.

Caleb and I got the opportunity for more snow art, and instead of the Stegasourus, Caleb wanted to make "all of us". So, here we are in all our snow glory. Daddy, Mommy, Caleb and Nathan. It warmed up a few days later and Nathan was the first casualty, with help from Caleb of course.

I always said growing up, that if it was going to be cold it better snow, well this winter that has been the case, and I have loved it!

In Memory of Fred

This story caught my eye today in the Washington Post, "Frisbee Inventor, Fred Morrison Dies". I never really embraced the disc revolution until I got the left coast, but I have enjoyed many an hour tossing one around with friends and family over the past 10 years.

My greatest frisbee memories are:

1) Playing Frisbee golf with Tony Martin, RA in Ashton hall and launching a disc from the top of the tiered parking lot on SPU's campus with the target of "Chucks" Moyer door. (Only a few cars were hit...each day).

2) Countless times playing on the beach in SoCal. Honestly, if you haven't thrown a frisbee at the beach on a warm sunny day, you're missing out.

3) Throwing a frisbee through a friends car window in a parking lot at APU...all the way through and out the other side...probably the best throw of my life!

Fred, thanks for the great invention!

Let it Snow...but just a little bit please...

Yes we are still alive. I know it has been three months since any updates, and much has happened during that time frame. I'll try to post a few tonight but most all the photos, (over 50) are on the flickr page to the left.

You may or may not have heard about our Christmas Eve Blizzard that shut the whole state down. We got 14 inches in about 8 hours with 40-50 mph winds. The drifts were 4-6 feet in places. We were out at the farm celebrating Christmas that morning and decided we should head back to our house because by this time, all the interstates in OK were closed. The 25 mile drive took two hours and God sent an angel in the form of a snow plow for the last half of the drive which by far was the worst.

The snow plow actually got stuck a mile from our house but we tredged along. When we got to our street, two cars were already stuck at our intersection in a drift over both of their hoods, so we had to go around the block. Coming up to our drive our driveway was 4 feet deep all the way across so I gunned it up and over the curb and into the neighbors yard where our Montero Sport sat for two days, until the thaw began.

It was great though because we were completely snowed in for 24 hours on Christmas day none the less. The snow is still melting, but we did get to build our version of a 'snow man' honoring Caleb's favorite show, "Dinosaur Train" this is Morris the Stegosaurus.

This is what you can do with a 4 foot drift, maybe more carving than building but fun for the whole family! Caleb says Morris scares the monsters and icky things away so they don't come into our house. I don't know what is going to happen when he is completely melted, which will still be another week or so.

In late October, we returned to So Cal for Azusa Pacific's Homecoming which was Tara's 10th year from undergrad! This was a great week spent with family and friends. We spent the first 3 days in Ventura and Malibu with family. This was Nathan's first chance to see the beach and the ocean, and he loved it! Caleb still talks about the 'ginormous' wave that knocked him down and daddy saving him. It was fun spending time with the Ventura folks.

Then we migrated 80 miles east to Duarte and spent the remainder of our days at the Strawn abode. Chuck, Carrie and Mihret were great to spend our vacation with as well. The kids had a bunch of fun playing together and the parents enjoyed catching up as well.

We were only two weeks from Nathan's 1st b-day so we celebrated for Jackie, Durne and the Strawns and Nathan consumed his first sugar! Check back in the flickr pages to Caleb's first, it is fun to compare! :)

All in all it was a great time. We defintely miss So Cal but our adventures in OK are treating us well and we are thankful for our move to the flyover state. We will defintiely be back west whenever we can spare the money and time which is hopefully boomer sooner than later! :)

Being Nathan's first Halloween, he really was a trooper. As you can see he was a pudgy monkey, and a cute one at that. Caleb and cousin Cole were fire fighters and had a great time playing together. As an aside, see the photo album on the left and Caleb's 'rain suit' is very familiar.

We had a busy night before the night at our Church and SNU. This pic is actually from SNU which did a great fall festival for the community. The following night Caleb and Tara trick or treated around our neighborhood. There is another great pic of the two of them in the flickr album as well as more of our monkey. Check them out!

There are some Colorado pics from my trip to the condo a week and 1/2 ago. Colin and I climbed 4 (3 different) 14ers. We also hiked the Lillypad trail from beginning to end. The Aspen photos are from that hike, and the rocky photos from the top of the world :)

We are doing great. It is amazing that Nathan is almost 1. He is changing so much right now! Caleb is loving school and as you can see from the videos, has a love for singing now.

New Pics, New Pics! I know it has been a while. It is August and that means busy at work. The RA's are back, training is underway and New Student Orientation begins in a week. I had a few moments and wanted to get caught up here.

This pic is Caleb with his new big boy underwear. He thinks he is so silly putting them on his face. He is actually doing VERY well with potty training. Less than a handful of accidents in over two months. He is so excited to begin preschool at the end of the month and we are glad to get him started in it as well. He is just a sponge and school will be very good for him!

Nathan is growing up so fast. He just turned 9 months old on Tuesday. Just this week he stood up from a sitting position without holding on to something for the first time. That is a good two months before Caleb! I've always heard, talk fast walk slow, or walk fast, talk slow. We've got one of each. Nathan communicates with grunts and yells :) But he understands much!

Colorado Vacation

From June 15-30th we took our annual summer trip to our Colorado condo. We had a wonderful time. Grandma Jackie and Grandpa Durne were there for the first half of the trip and we had a great time with them! Durne and Michael scared a bunch of fish and caught a few fly fishing. Both boys were great. Nathan had a much better experience than in February where he ended up in the ER with Altitude sickness and low O2.

There are many pics in the album on the left showing some our our hikes out the back of the condo. As always it was hard to leave. We hope many of you will be able to join us sometime in the future on a trip up there!

We decided to enroll Caleb in Swimming Lessons this summer. It is only $30 for two weeks worth of lesson at the Yukon City Pool. We signed him up in the preschool class. Monday was the first day and as you can see, it is him and the girls! He is having a fun time and doing great! He is learning how to put his face in the water, float on his back, use his arms in the water, and move around/get comfortable in the water. Check out the flickr album on the left for more fun pics of his swimming lessons and his new swimming pool given to him by the Cali grandparents!

A Grand Weekend

On Thursday, we had two expected and one pleasant surprise visitor come from CA to visit the Yukon abode. Grandpa Durne, Grandma Jackie, and suprisingling, GREAT-grandma Albie arrive Thursday evening and departed Monday night. It was so wonderful having them come to visit. The time was spent both at home and around the city, with some of the highlights being going to Unplugits and Albie getting to see the bombing memorial for the first time. As always happens, the time went by way too fast and we can't wait until we can spend time together again. The flickr album on the left has more pics of our time together. Enjoy!!

Our friends Peter and Beth visted us in the fall before Nathan was born. Peter works at Baylor so they brought cute coordinating shirts for the boys. We are now coming into some warmer weather and Nathan is getting bigger so we took advantage of a mid-60's day and got the boys dressed in these cute shirts. Nathan is Growing Up

Post three of the "April catchup" begins with Nathan. In April he has had some major milestones. He has had his two bottom, middle teeth come in (haven't been able to catch them on camera just yet). He also has perfected the art of rolling over, and over, and over...so he is mobile. This is fun, but also we must now be strategic with where we put him because he will travel to where and what he wants. He has a few new sounds, and laughs a lot more now than last month. And he smiles at almost anybody now to get a smile back! He is now on solids and his diet includes rice cereal, peas, prunes, green beans, sweet potatoes :), and apple sauce. Caleb was and has always been a good eater in that he will eat everything, just in smaller amounts. Nathan, on the other hand is putting the food away at a great rate, and at a younger age by a month or so than Caleb.

Caleb of course is loving being a big brother. He is all about helping out with Nathan, and even has been able to sooth him when he is fussy. He really loves to hold Nathan, and we have to constantly tell him he cannot pick him up just yet. Caleb also LOVES helping daddy with the yard work. There are new pics in the flickr album on the left showing Caleb helping 'mow' the yard! He has helped plant flowers, spray the weeds in the front yard, pick up old leaves, and now mow. He is ALL BOY and loves to get dirty!

All in all April was a GREAT month for the Houstons. We are very blessed and are looking forward to a great summer of travel and family and friends!

America: Where people are sick and Pigs are scared!

If you have been around me this week, you know my thoughts on the 'pandemic' spreading like, wild, I mean, birthday candle fire across the world. I ran across this story today and found it a tad ironic. Let me get this straight...the people could infect the pigs? Classic!

Pig Farmers in US Take Every Precaution to prevent Swine Flu

Now being a former pig farmer (I use this in those uncomfortable get to know you games, or random trivia about yourself contests), I do realize first hand that disease spreads VERY quickly through swine heards. (We had a pretty bad case of roto virus in our heard and lost almost a third of the litters one spring.) But as a few have noticed, here and here maybe this thing is a little blown out of proportion. Now the pig farmers are not only standing up against the name (which has been formally changed to protect the pigs to H1N1), they are banning the disease carrying humans from the farms. Good for them. They should get some of this press and 15 minutes of fame!

Finally, let's keep in mind that in one week in our country, this 'pandemic' still hasn't even doubled in size. Compared to not only the common flu, or if you think about summers past, West Nile, Bird Flu, or SARS, this is a pebble in the proverbial pond of humanity. But, I do have my mask ready and have passed them out to my co-workers because I like to always be prepared! (Disclaimer: I do feel very sad about the individuals and their families that have been or are directly impacted by this, and do not minimize what they are going through)

A 3 Year Old

On Monday, April 6, 2009, Caleb turned 3!! I know people say it all the time, but oh how time flies. Tara and I were thinking back over the three years and all the changes both with our family and with Caleb. Having Nathan has also helped us think back to Caleb and the developmental changes. It is fun to look back at the flickr photo album and see Caleb's growth and development. For those who know him, you know he has always been very verbal. He is actually spelling words now! Pretty crazy for a three year old. Car, Dog are his standbys, but more crazy is how he knows the sounds the letters make and can tell you what letter almost any word starts with. I'm hoping to get some of this "hook-ed on F-Honics work-ed fo meh!" on video soon.

We had a great birthday party (rivaling my best parties, and again he is just three!) We had about 30 people in our modest home and had a super time. Below are a few of the pics from the fun. More will be added to the flickr album on the left.

The first three years have been such a blessing...trying at times, but a blessing none the less. Caleb is a GREAT boy and we can't imagine life without him!

When the Houston kids were younger (read high school and college aged), they would have friends and family over for epic Easter egg hunts at the farm. For those who haven't seen it, the farm is about 30 miles outside of OKC proper and is 30 plus acres of rustic land, barns, open fields, and corrals. It was a great place to grow up and even greater place to hunt for Easter eggs.

This year, my sister Lacy, Tara and I decided to resurrect the old tradition by inviting friends and family out (with their families) for a good 'ole Houston Easter egg hunt. The day arrived and we had 75 people make the drive to the country in preparation for the hunt. Kids of all ages came and we divided the 'kids' ages 5 and under and 6 and up into two different hunting areas. Each parent supplied at least a dozen eggs per kid so there were MORE than enough eggs to go around. Of course the little ones 'hunt' was mostly a collection, while the older ones had to decide whether or not it was worth it to put their hand/arm in 'that hole' because there was just as likely a snake or other animal in there rather than an egg!

Each family brought a food item, and my parents supplied the burgers, brats and hot dogs. It was a SUPER tradition brought back to life and I hope we do it again next year. If you are in the OKC area before Easter, let us know and we will send you the invite!

OK, so I'm going to do a 3 part series recaping this busy month. This will catch up on some missed posts. The first will be Caleb's birthday. New pics!! New Pics!! Check out the album on the left for some new pictures. There are quite a few.

This one is from this morning. We had a fluke snowstorm hit the state last night and we woke up to 2 inches of snow (some parts of the state got over a foot!) Caleb wanted to go make a snowman, and the wet, spring snow was perfect. This is his first ever snowman. We took some black rocks from the neighbor on one side, sticks from the neighbor on the other side, and a carrot from the fridge (which it was everything I could do to get him not to eat eat it!). It ended up about 3 feet tall, a little shorter than Caleb but he was so proud!

Nathan is doing well. He has started on rice cereal and green beans. Doing pretty good really, but still trying to figure out how to keep the tongue from spitting/pushing it out instead of swallowing. He has definitely found his voice and I hope to catch some video soon...it is SO cute! He sings all the time it seems. He is still such a calm spirited baby...such a difference from Caleb.

This is spring break for me so I will have some time to chronicle from Jan 27 (last post) to date. The boys are doing very well. It seems like we have been playing ping pong with sickness, back and forth, with Tara and I staying clear for the most part. The weather is warming up so hopefully the sickness is gone! It is 2009 and we are doing well. The holidays were great for us. Caleb is a great big brother and Nathan is growing up so quickly. There are many uploaded pics in the flickr album on the left. Some highlights are pics of Caleb loving in Nathan, Christmas morning with Caleb's train table (which he LOVES), and some cute pics from our outing at the Cowboy Hall of Fame. We are back to being healthy after a 2 week stint of RSV (Nathan) and an off and on again cold (Caleb). Happy new year to each of you and more will come soon!

National Championship

Being a sports fan, today is a fun day...the college football national championship will be won or lost tonight in Miami. I have found it interesting, now living in a place where the local school is playing for the title game, to see the sports fever alive and well.

Living on the left coast for the past 10 years, I can't recall the last time I've lived in a place where college fever is everywhere (no USC doesn't count because 10 years ago when I came to Cali I couldn't find USC fans only UCLA fans, and mysteriously that population shifted with the hiring of a certain Pete Carroll, or maybe a few more wins a year). OU mania is full and very visible today. Literally, at the gas station, the bank and at school today, that has been the topic of conversation. All the radio stations are talking about it, it is all over the news, papers, local Internet. It definitely is a different perspective vs. living in Malibu and getting ready to watch the game tonight where a very small number of the populous could find Norman, OK on a map! What is going to be fascinating is what happens tomorrow. I am confident that a win won't bring flaming couches, but a loss might. Being an OSU fan, I am going to cheer for the local team but win our lose , I just want a great game for the sports fans out there.

It has been a great 2008 for the Houstons! In our attempt to keep up with technology, we decided to put our Christmas letter online (and it's eco-friendly!) In January we made our annual trek to CO for skiing with friends and family. We had amazing snow and great times! Tara completed her first half marathon in February with her good friend Stacy and despite not really training, they made great time! Spring brought news of a new baby on the way, a trip to OK for Easter and Caleb's second birthday. Grandpa Durne and Grandma Jackie took us all to Disneyland to celebrate. We had a wonderful time at the 'happiest place on earth'.

May brought an end to another academic year for Tara and Michael at Pepperdine and Azusa Pacific. Little did we know that would be our last academic year in California for some time. In June, Michael got offered and accepted a position as the Associate Dean of Students at his Alma mater, Southern Nazarene University, in Bethany, OK. We decided to make the 1500 mile move from the beach to the plains. It was a very difficult decision but in the end the positives of Tara being able to stay at home with the kids, being able to buy a house, in a great neighborhood with excellent schools, and being within 30 minutes of all of Michael's family won out. We miss Malibu and friends in Cali often, but know that God has us in OK during this season of our lives. We closed on our first home in July and Michael began another academic year in August at SNU.

Fall brought many transitions (OK weather changes very quickly) and we slowly settled into our home. Caleb loved actually having weather, something he never got to experience in Cali. Great grandma Albie and Grandma Jackie came in late September and it was a great visit. The end of October brought Halloween week and fall parties. Finally on November 11th our second son was born, Nathan MacIntyre Houston. He was (is) healthy and pretty opposite from Caleb as babies go (sleeps, doesn't fuss too much, pretty laid back, etc). It was great having Durne and Jackie here for the weeks following his birth through Thanksgiving. Caleb had fun with the grandparents and really is making the transition to being a big brother very well. We have to keep reminding ourselves he is just 2 1/2 but all in all he is great.

Now the cold of winter has set in (something new for all of us, Caleb didn't wear shoes or socks for that matter until he was almost two!), and the first OK holiday season is upon us. The house and tree are lighted (not in Griswald style but it will have to do), work is done for a few weeks, and it is time to spend some good quality, family time. Nathan is one month old. It is amazing how fast a month has gone! Nathan is really a great baby minus the gas. We still are battling that a bit, but luckily not at night. He is giving us 3-4 hour stretches which is wonderful, and is really a calm baby. He is getting more and more alert every day.

Caleb is also doing great! He has made the transition to big brother very well. He always says things like, "he is cute" or "look how sweet he is". We are truly blessed indeed!

Thanksgiving was great with the Mizes, Relva, Krista and Mitchell. Jackie and Durne were able to be here for about three weeks and it was such a blessing! There are many pics of them in the photo album. Check out the photo album on the left for 30 more pics during the first month.

One week ago tomorrow (Tuesday) Nathan was born. It really has been a super week. Nathan is pretty much the opposite of Caleb thus far. Nurses well, sleeps well, likes the car seat, doesn't fuss...all blessings this early on.

Caleb is doing so well with the transition. He has the moments all 2 year olds have but more often than not he is such a great helper! This blog is titled "and Nathan" because you can see in the album on the left, many updated pics of different people...and Nathan. It is so great to have Grandma Jackie in town and we can't wait for Grandpa Durne to arrive this weekend. It also has been fun having friends over and a blessing to have food made and delivered for us!

Finally, it is great to have all the OK family so close and able to celebrate this with us. Keep checking as I will put up some video soon as well.

Nathan MacIntyre Houston was born on 11/11/08 at 7:58 a.m. and weighed exactly 7 pounds and stretched out to 19.5 inches long. Mom and baby are doing great. We actually got a little more sleep than expected last night which is always welcome ;)

Caleb is doing well as well and you can see more pics of him holding Nathan in the album to the left. We will return home Friday afternoon and I will upload more pics from the hospital stay and the first days at home this weekend.

We can't believe it but tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. cst will, Lord willing, have a new baby boy! It has been a crazy 9 months to say the least. It all began in February when I remember we found out right after the AC retreat (orientation coordinators at APU). Then just 3 months in I got the job at SNU and we moved in July. Tara made it through the furnace that is August in OK and has had a great third trimester. We now have a home of our own, are looking forward to completing our family :) We will be in the hospital until Friday, but I'll try to upload pics to facebook and here sometime this week. If you are around please stop by the hospital if you get a chance...we would love to see you! For those that are not local, I hope to get many pics up here so you can rejoice with us! Tara and I were watching President Elect Obama's speech on Tuesday night and the parents of a toddler came out. During one point of the speech he uttered the words "Yes We Can" about 8 times in a row. Tara turned to me and said he sounds like Bob the Builder.

For those without children, Bob is famous for the phrase, "Can we build it? YES WE CAN!!" That got me thinking, maybe secretary of the interior, or better yet, Housing and Urban Development. Bob the Builder would definitely fit the moniker of 'change' proposed during the campaign and is not a Washington insider. Or maybe he is. Maybe he has been planning his political rise all along and started with the younger demographic! If Bob pops up on the watch list for potential Obama cabinet positions, you heard it here first! ;)

Tara is definitely doing well. One month from tomorrow and we will be in the hospital in the a.m. to have #2! We are excited.

Caleb is as well. He is doing so well and growing up so fast! Check out a few new pics in the album on the left. He understands the big brother language and that his sibling is in mommy's tummy. He wants to touch her tummy to feel the baby move...and talks to him now! He also helped up pick the name. We narrowed it to two that we both liked and asked him. We are going with his choice...hopefully his brother likes his name :)

Taken today, we are in the 28th week. Everything checked out fine at the Dr. appointment this week. We now are going every two weeks until the final month! Definitely the home stretch.

The due date is November 16th, but because we have to have a C-section (Caleb was an emergency C) we settled on the date for this one. Tuesday, November 11th will be the day. 11/11/08 (easy for Dad to remember :) Hopefully this one won't come as early as Caleb though and make it to week 39 :) We are starting to get REALLY excited, but still not even close on a name. We have the middle and last name picked, but not the first! Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Again, sorry for the drought, but now there WILL be at least a weekly pregers update. Also, check out many more pics on the left. I also have quite a few videos I will be trying to get up very soon on YouTube, so keep checking back.

NotOKAnymore was created over two years ago as a way to keep everyone up to date on our first pregnancy with Caleb. Well now, #2 (hee hee hee) is on the way. This is a picture of the beginning of the final trimester for us. Tara really just started showing around the 22nd week, but now is getting closer and bigger every day.

All in all this has been a great pregnancy, just like the first. Although chasing Caleb around has made for some more fatigue, no morning sickness and not too many weird cravings has been a blessing!

I know it has been a while since any posts, but with the move and August (the craziest time of the year for my profession), I haven't been able to get up and going. Now though, I think I'm back. I plan on reviving the weekly pics and updates of Tara's pregnancy (which is how this whole thing started btw), but first I couldn't pass this up.

"9 Year Old Kicked Out of League Because He Is Too Good". Yes you read that right. Maybe you have heard or maybe you haven't but the high level summary is that this kid pictured is a 9 year old and the powers that be in his youth league have said he cannot finish the season and his team is to be disbanded (they are 8-0 with only a few games left to play btw). Too good? Really? How can a kid be punished for being too good? Other reports I've read said that the perennial league champ tried to recruit him away from the team he is on before the season and is throwing a stink because they will not win this year.

It all is very messy with lawsuits and such (keep in mind they are 8-10 year olds) but at the base of it all is a trend in our society I find alarming. Schools have outlawed tag, we are encouraged to 'bubble wrap' our children, and cities are padding their lamp posts!

When will it all stop? Is it possible to 'over protect'? I tend to think yes. Do I think that this boy probably should have been in a more competitive league? Yes, but that should have been discussed before the season started, not right before it ends and the 'wrong' team is winning. Finally, kicking him out and dismantling the team, what does that do?

To use a quote from "The Incredibles", "If everybody is special, then nobody is special". Unfortunately, most of the students I work with today have grown up with this societal trend and EXPECT to be treated as "special" and be "protected" from the hard things in life, which btw, I believe often create the best teachable moments!

Confusing enough? Well, I don't know what I'm going to call this now, but I wanted to inform the reading few that Tara and I have decided to make a large transition. We are moving to Yukon, Oklahoma! Now before this sounds too crazy, here is the back story. My good friend was offered and accepted the Vice President of Student Development job at my alma mater, Southern Nazarene University. He created a position that I knew I would like so I applied and got an offer to be the Associate Dean of Student Development. After much prayer and consideration, Tara and I decided we should make this move, all be it kicking and screaming away from the beach and beautiful Malibu.

We made this decision for a number of reasons, job promotion, closer to my entire immediate family (30 minutes max to any of them), commute time/time with family/slower pace of life (6 minute commute vs 1 hour in LA traffic), we can buy a home(close on Friday, July 11th), and Tara can stay at home if she likes (we are due the 2nd week of November with our second.

The downside is leaving probably one of the most beautiful places in the world, leaving a great job and university, farther from Tara's family, and farther from good friends.

At the end of the day, though, this move makes a lot of sense. Will it be a tough transition, yes. But we know it is the right thing to do a this season of our life. We have lived on a college campus all of our married life, and if you include our years in college Tara has lived on campus since 1995 and I have since 1993! That is 15 years living in the 'college bubble'. It will be nice to finally have a home of our own, with non college neighbors. For me, it is also nice to go 'home'. Being close to my parents, my sister and brother-in-law and nephew, and brother and sister in law will be a blessing! Also raising Caleb in an environment (not weather) that is more in line with our ethos will be nice as well. The school district we moved into is one of the best in the area.

We hope to have told most of you in person before this but the time had come to update this! Hopefully, with the extra 10 hours a week I gain in commute, I will be more diligent with this site and keep you all up to date with video/pic/and story. This site was started a little over 2 years ago chronicalling Tara's pregnancy. I hope to get back to that as well!

Long time no hear...I know I know...sorry for the hiatus. It has been a little crazy finishing the year out and traveling a bit for work and family. But now summer is here and life is slower...kinda ;)

The terrible twos are in full force and mom and dad are just trying to keep up with the boy! Caleb has a new found love and it is close to his dad's heart...the bronco! Caleb LOVES riding in the truck and we do it probably 3 times a week...which at 10 miles to the gallon, downhill with the wind, is pretty pricey in todays market...but hey, it makes him happy and it is good bonding time. The other day he wanted to "look under there daddy" so I lifted the hood and he can now identify the fan, battery, spark plug wires, radiator and air filter! Gotta love old cars, they are easy to work on and describe :)

Beginning Year 3

Wow how time flies. I know, I sound like an old, stale, gas (or as Caleb says it, "blowing gas"). Really though, Caleb turned 2 last weekend and Tara and I were discussing these two years and the pace at which he has grown! We took our last free plane trip a few weeks back, so not only are we entering the terrible twos (they actually arrived a couple months ago), we now have to pay for three to fly. 1/3 more is quite staggering to say the least.

We had a joint b-day party for him and Mihret because her first special day was roughly a week earlier, or later (you see she is from Ethiopia so April 2nd is the best guess). It was a great time! We had a bunch of people in our home and it made for a festive event to say the least. I commented to a few that we really had a wide range of people at our party. We had babies (6 weeks old) and great grandma's (Albie). We had cousins, and friends from work. It was a great time. I've uploaded many pics of the fun times on the left. Coming to a Laundry Room Near You

I just saw this commercial and wonder exactly how it will influence those I work with daily. Given, I don't know how many times I've gone to the laundry room (while either a student or a staff member on a college campus) and been frustrated because someone has left, or forgot, their load in either the dryer or washer. I have on many an occasion removed said clothes and put them on top of the machine, so I can put my articles in the machine. Now, this Cheetos add takes it to another level.

Maybe nothing will happen, but I see college students, with the resources of junk food prevalent, putting the commercial into practice. Ultimately, it might lead to others being more responsible with their laundry, but the passive/aggressive conflict style isn't a healthy one. I realize this is intended to be a lite hearted spot but the target audience in most definitely college students...who encounter this exact scene often.

As a person who works directly with these students, I can imagine initially how I might be amused if this happened, but then comes the responsibility conversation about living in healthy community, and respecting others and their belongings...

One thing I have learned over my time working with college students is media does have a major influence on college life. It is just a matter of time until this media influences 18-25 year olds across this country.

Some days I read some-thing that makes me just scratch my head. Today was one of those days. I just ran across this headline and find it to be suitable for a blog post, "Padded Lampposts Tested in London to Prevent Cell Phone Texting Injuries".

We've discussed this similar theme here, and here, but this is beginning to get crazy. This idea is happening because people are texting enough and running into light poles, and obviously getting hurt, thus the needed padding! I have so many questions...first, if they are running into light poles, what about running into other people? Second, where do I need to stand to watch this spectacle? That would be a good time! Finally, could this be possibly leading to the outlandish idea created in this wonderful masterpiece?

I don't know where we are heading (and neither do they), but it used to be a joke that one couldn't walk and chew gum...obviously that is closer to reality that once thought...

Caleb is growing up! It is amazing that he is not a baby anymore, rather a little boy! He has been talking for a long time now and we take it for granted sometimes but he still amazes us. Other parents at the park guess he is 2 1/2 and are shocked when we say he is only 22 months. With the words come opinions and emotions (I know a shocker with his parents and all) so we are having to begin to navigate his emotions :)

This Would Be Fun

Check out the YouTube video of a real live social experiment put on in Grand Central Station. It is really pretty amazing to not only watch the people doing the experiement but the reaction of those around them.

This takes me back to my days as an undergrad when in a Sociology class we were asked to do a social norms experiment and report back. The creativity of a college student is fun to see and I can remember some of the students 'projects'. A couple of my favorites were two guys sitting on the tables in the Caf for meals that day instead of the chairs, a girl intentionally standing close to people when speaking to them, and one of my favorites (which I do sometimes in crowded places) walking "in peoples walking lanes" (you know how you pick out a path when walking in the mall and it irks you when someone walks in your path). Anyway, this video took me back to that. My project, btw, was going down town and riding in the elevators of the high rise buildings...except, I would get on and go stand in the corner like I was in trouble. It was fun!

Back from Colorado and no broken bones to report! We had a great, but short trip to the high country, and couldn't have asked for better snow. January ski trip 3.0 probably produced the best snow yet. It snowed each night, with the most coming on Friday night (the night before Vail). For Brad, Bryan and myself, it produced an 'epic' (and I don't use that term lightly) day on the slopes. This picture tries to show just how deep the snow way. It was a good knee deep almost everywhere. I wish I would have taken a pic of the signs saying, "It's a powder day. All groomed runs will have at least 10 inches of fresh snow on top, but they were groomed within the past 12 hours. Enjoy!"

I have never skied in anything deeper than my ankles so it was a great experience. You know it is great when I'm not the only one falling down! (check out the snow of Bryan's helmet). Let's just say I've never seen him fall before this trip :)

It was great to have Brad and Katie Powell join us. We all had a great time skiing and hanging out. It is such a blessing to have the condo and be able to bring family and friends together for vacations. My parents also were gracious enough to come and baby sit the boys. I know Caleb loved every minute playing with Grandpa Marvin and Grandma Linda.

All in all it was another wonderful time in Summit County. We, as always, were sad to return. Make sure to check out the photo album on the left. I will also try to upload a video of my 'jumping on skis' sometime this week. Check back for that later...

A Merry Christmas

Today, for the first time in our marriage, Tara and I hosted Christmas in our home. We have celebrated seven December 25ths together before this year, and never hosted it. Our first Christmas (Version '00) we celebrated together in our home in Seattle, just the two of us. Since then we have celebrated in Colorado twice, OK twice, and the Bay Area Twice. This year, with the blessing of our new home in Malibu, we decided that we had the space and invited both sets of family to come and enjoy the holiday together.

A blessing Tara and I have is that our parents get along. This is the third time we have had a combined Christmas and each has been wonderful. My sister Lacy, her husband Bryan, and my nephew Cole came out last Wednesday and flew out today, just after we finished opening presents. My parents and 'adopted sister', Relva drove out in the new RV and arrived early Sunday morning and will be staying until Thursday. Tara's brother Colin arrived in the middle of the night Christmas Eve/Christmas morn and Tara's parents arrived mid morning today and will stay through Thursday.

Christmas with little ones is amazing. Cole and Caleb are still about one year from completely grasping the day, but they enjoyed their new gifts. It was also, just nice having family together and in our home. Again, this is a blessing because in today's age I seem to hear about people complaining about having a full house more than celebrating it. We definitely had/have a full house and it is great! It does make me wish that we were closer to immediate family. Just seeing Caleb and Cole playing together is a special treat.

All in all, it was perfect. As I was driving Lacy, Bryan and Cole back to the airport I reflected that this was the first Christmas I have spent in So. Cal. It is definitely a different experience being 72 and sunny on December 25th...but the reason for the season isn't dictated by the weather...and today was glorious!

Malibu Fire Update - Tuesday, October 23, 2007

We are still stuck on campus. The Pacific Coast Highway is still closed as is Malibu Canyon, Topanga Canyon, and Kanan Road. Yesterday, we were still able to get out for a brief bit and take some back streets to Ralphs to get some much needed food. While out we took a few pictures. The first picture and this one below are actually from on campus. You can see the fire burned right down to the administration building and melted the light and burned the paint off the stop sign in the main parking lot.
These next two pictures show the damage down in Malibu next to Ralphs. For those of you familiar you will see the Malibu Yo sign on the left and see how the bank tower has collapsed. Also, you can see the standing water around the fountain left from the fire fight.

Finally, this is a picture heading back up to campus. This is looking north over the burned castle. Pepperdine is to the left of the picture and the fire is moving towards the right of the picture. For now we look to be in the clear, hopefully!

October 21, 2007 - Malibu Wildfire

11:30 p.m. on Saturday, I was getting ready for bed and I asked Tara, "Do you smell smoke?" She said she didn't think so. We went outside to check and it smelled faintly like a campground in the summertime. Tara said, "This won't be good" because the Santa Ana winds were already blowing 40 mph plus. About 4:30 a.m. Sunday, our power went out. Tara had just got up with Caleb because he called out to her and she got back into bed and said our power just went out, must be the winds or something. Right before 6 a.m., Tara got the call on her cell phone we thought would come some day, "There is a fire in the area, get ready to contact your students."

Because of the power outage and it still being dark, info was still scarce because nobody could turn on the TV. I decided to go out and listen to the radio in my car, beause I knew the morning drive/news stations would be covering the fire. These two pictures are what I saw when I walked outside...Not what you want to see at six in the morning. By 6:45 a.m. we got the call that we, and the rest of campus was to relocate to the Tyler Campus Center, which houses the Cafeteria and also is the equivalent of the Student Union building. This picture shows where we were going.

Even though it sounds a little off at face value, Pepperdine's Emergency Preparedness plan is a "shelter and place" plan rather than an evacuation. The reason for this is simple. There are only three main ways to get in and out of Malibu, and in the case of a wildfire it would be crazy to send 2000 plus people out onto those roadways clogging them up while the fire personnel are coming to fight the fire. Also the danger of sending people out onto the roads that the fire is racing towards is very high. However, it is frustrating because the news agencies like to sensationalize things, just a bit and phrases like, "Pepperdine students are being held captive on their campus" comes out. Also you have interviews with our administration where the news anchor says I just don't understand, why don't you get them out. Really, the safest place to be is right here on campus, in one place, surrounded by over 400 firefighters, 6-8 water dropping helicopters, fire chiefs and red cross staging on campus, and a two week supply of food and water!

Around 8 a.m. the fire came over the ridge and really began "Threatening Campus". Again, we were safe because we were down on the front of campus, in a stucco building, with tile roof, surrounded by concrete plazas and parking lots. Also, right out front of this building are two large ponds and the helicopters were using these ponds to fill up. For the next 4-5 hours we sat in the cafeteria watching the helicopters fly in and fly out and fight the fire around us. They fought the line of the fire threatening our campus and no structures were burned. Late afternoon we were able to go home and it was a relief to be able to eat at home and sleep in our own bed.

The fire has currently moved east about 2 miles but the winds are still blowing and it is only 10 percent contained. The roads are still closed and we are asked not to leave campus. We are thankful for everyone who planned and fought this fire. It isn't over yet but 24 hours ago it looked a lot different than now.

I've finally tabulated the words Caleb now knows. All the information I've read says that at 18 months it is normal for a child to know 10-15 words and a few 2 word phrases. Our pediatrician was actually suprised when he asked Tara about Caleb's language development. He asked Tara if Caleb understood simple instructions. He said, "Does he understand a phase like go get your shoes, so we can go to the park?" At that, Caleb said, "Shoes, Park, go Park, go Park, Park? Park!" Our doctor said, "Oh I'm sorry, he definitely has a handle on his language." Tara went on to explain that he has been talking for a while now and learning 3-5 words a day it seems. His pronounciation is that of a toddler but it is definitely understandable. For some of these I have written how he says them. Again, these are words he can recognize and says. And of course this isn't exhaustive. There are words he has been saying for over a month that I just remembered today.

Caleb - 18 Months

Caleb has been sick the past three days. The doctor said yesterday he was on the back end of having croup. He is beginning to be more like himself but is still has a little less energy than normal.

At the check up he was 33.5 inches tall and 24 lbs, 12 ozs. He has lost about a pound this week because of his sickness and that puts his weight at the 30th percentile for boys his age (he has been right there all along it seems). Also, he is in the 80th percentile for height (again, pretty consistent all along). He is growing great and talking so much.

More will come tonight. I will put up some more pictures from this week, and list out the words he is saying and recognizing!

As promised new photos are uploaded to the flickr album on the left. The pictures are mostly from our trip to see Grandma and Grandpa Mize and Uncle Colin in Pleasanton, CA. We had a great long weekend with them. You will see Caleb being his normal busy self.

At LONG last

It's been a crazy 6+ weeks for the Houston's! Both working in Higher Ed means August and September are the busy season. I don't know if it is a good thing or not with our schools not overlapping start dates. One, if they did it would be crazy, but at least it would only be 3-4 weeks of crazy. This current way means from August 1 - September 14 one of us is out of our minds busy.

During this time we still were able to find some quality time and take some cute pics. Make sure to check out the album on the left for 20 new pics.

We are going to see grandma Jackie and grandpa Durne this weekend. Hopefully Caleb does well the 5 1/2 hours in the car. I will definitely post how he does plus write some two pages of words he already knows and says. Thanks for your patience, and now hopefully with things more 'normal' we can get back to posting a little more!

There are a bunch of new pics up on the album on the left. Some are of my office this year. We came to Malibu the evening before we went to SF last week. There are others of Caleb doing lots of stuff. He is VERY busy ALL the time! There are few of our views, and then my new TV!

We are doing well. Caleb seems to be learning and saying new words every day! He is mastering the hills outside and love walking around outside often. Our busy season begins on Monday and will last for about a month. I may or may not be able to update this during that time, but will have much to update in Sept.

Sensationalism in the Media: Part Deux

Back when the Virginia Tech tragedy happened, I posted about how the media played the killers video tape and how sensationalism has taken over. Well this was validated yesterday, here in L.A. when last nights news on two of the three major networks didn't open with the war in Iraq or terrorist threats, or the tragic bridge collapse, they opened with the the Mayors affair with a news reporter followed up by the Phil Spector murder case. Then 6 minutes into the 30 minute program we saw bridge coverage!

What makes this even more confusing is the fact that the highway safety commission just listed the top 50 bridges in the country that need repair and 38, yes THIRTY EIGHT of the 50 are in L.A. Now we wouldn't want to address this on the nightly news, in front of an affair would we?

I read a story today out of London about Oxford Students finding themselves in trouble because of their "Facebook" profiles. Interestingly enough, I have been working with these issues for almost 3 years now. Pepperdine first addressed students pictures on Facebook and other online social networks like MySpace when evidence arose that was in direct violation to the Community Standards. It has become such a large issue in Higher Education that there have been sessions at the national conferences on how to handle 'Facebook Related Issues'.

I know that I am not in the minority in my job when I prescreen my student leaders by looking at their online profiles. I am honest with them during the interview process and try to help them understand that they are accountable for what is on the public domain, or the WWW. This is definitely a different world we live in today. We didn't have to worry about stories or pictures getting sent around the world, unless we sent them. Today, with seemingly every college student having a digital camera, pictures are taken of students in all types of situations. I tell my students, you can't necessarily control the pictures taken of you, but you can control what you are doing in those pictures. Students generally are understanding of this but it is still met with resistance. I attribute it to the fast paced, more technologically savvy world we live in. The perks of the digital age also come with consequences and I try to 'educate' as many students as possible to both.

A Sport I've Never Played

My wife calls me a sports junkie and that is pretty fair. I LOVE sports. If there is a sport/game I'm a sucker for it. Well, after reading this article, "Player Finds Tooth Stuck in Head", I think I know why I haven't played rugby, and never really want to, BTW. What is crazy is that he lived with said tooth in his head for 3+ months, NOT KNOWING IT WAS THERE! Any sport with this much risk, and desensitization probably isn't for me at this stage in life.

Climbing Mountains and Not Stairs

The last two weeks have brought some great adventures for us! We finished June by beginning our annual trip to our condo in Wildernest, CO (there is a link to it on the side of this page). I alway love going to CO because there is so much to do, winter or summer. We arrived on June 27th and spent the next 10 days playing above 9,000 feet! I got to fly fish 7 days and climb another 14er (Mt. Bierstadt), we white water rafted, took two day hikes, and of course did some shopping. It was great to spend time with family and friends. Tara's grandma Albie came for the first time and had a great time. Caleb and his cousin Cole had fun playing together as well. As for fly fishing, it was amazing. I just love it and having the Blue River within 5 minutes of our Condo is amazing! It is what they call it, a Gold Medal River, meaning excellent fly fishing! I caught at least one fish each day, and usually more. It is one of the most relaxing things I do, and is great for a vacation.

Our time in Colorado came to an end on Saturday July 7th. We flew back to L.A. and promptly were welcomed back by the airline losing only Caleb's carseat...luckily we were being picked up by a friend in our SUV with the other seat. (I finally got the seat back on Thursday of this week btw.) Our adventure though was just picking up steam! On Sunday morning, July 8th we moved for the 4th time in our 7+ year marriage. Tara was 'promoted' and with that came a living area change at Pepperdine. We accepted this with open arms because the new place is HUGE! 1500+ square feet, 4 bedrooms, 1 1/2 bath, dining room, living room, washer and dryer, double oven, two yards/patios, and sweeping views of the ocean! It is probably one of the nicest places we will ever live (on the open market it would sell for 2 million (yes MILLION) or more)! We just got the office partially set up yesterday, thus I can now do this. It is nice having an office outside of Caleb's room!

In there are pics of the 14er, our CO trip, the view from our dining room (and living room as well)...and more Caleb injuries. Let's just say, he likes to "hike" and while hiking outside our condo he fell on a rock! Tara and I thought it was going to be the emergency room but it didn't bleed or cut open. But it was again, the worst yet! Oh to have a little boy...

Natural Selection

I once heard an older, wiser man who was playing golf with me say, "If a golf ball has betrayed you once, don't go looking for it because it is bound to betray you again." He was referring to looking for a ball he hit into the woods. Instead of going on safari, he simply dropped a ball in the middle of the fairway and played his next shot.

That wisdom might have been beneficial to the man in this story, "Gator pulls Florida golfer into pond; man unhurt". I've never been one to spend a lot of time looking for lost balls in the water or woods. Those of you that play with me know however, that I will walk along the rough/water hazards and if I see a ball retrieve it with my 600 ft. ball retriever! BUT, when I was in Florida playing golf a year and a half ago, I stayed clear of the rough/water/cart paths...pretty much if my ball wasn't in the center cut, short grass, I let it go! Obviously this man was either, one brave, or two not thinking straight, because why would you, in Florida mind you, go sticking your hand/arm or any other body part near the water?

As my father in law says regarding those that make rescues of people lost in the wilderness, usually with helicopters, spending tons of taxpayer dollars, "The rescuers call those types of rescues 'INS' or Interfering with Natural Selection. Hopefully those playing golf will see the multiple signs on the course warning them of wildlife. Again, this guy didn't even see the sign posted on the same hole next to the same water hazard that the gator pulled him into! Amazing...

Catching up

Almost a month ago we went to OK for the Memorial Day weekend. We had a wonderful time and Tara's parents, Durne and Jackie were able to come as well. The new pics in the photo album show much of the trip. We spent 4 days there and were able to do many things. Caleb had a lot of firsts...riding on bike with dad, playing in the swimming pool with cousin Cole, seeing a tractor, cows and cats. It was a great time!

Caleb also saw rain for the first time. You can see a few pics of him in the orange shirt playing in the rain as it came off the house. Our last night there a good thunderstorm rolled through in the middle of the night and Caleb didn't like it at all. The thunder was loud and the lightening was bright enough to light up the room through the curtains. He wanted to be close to us so we had to bring him to bed. For nearly 30 minutes, he flinched each time the lightening flashed or the thunder rolled :(

The past two weeks we have been preparing for our move. We are not leaving Pepperdine, rather moving to a bigger place on campus. As part of Tara's new role we get to live in a 4 bedroom place, with sweeping ocean views. We have to be moved by July 9th, but with or Colorado trip going from June 27th through July 7th, we have to be packed before we leave! Thus we are in the process of finishing up packing as I type. We are so excited to be moving to the new place. So much more space, and great views, a yard and more grass outside the fence for Caleb equal very good times!

We are off to Colorado on Wednesday and I can't wait! It will be so much fun seeing family and a few friends. We all are looking for some nice time away in the beautiful Rockies. More will definitely come soon!

Been WAY too long!!!

Wow, time has really gotten away from me. The past few weeks have been a whirlwind for me and the fam. The end of May and early June were filled with work retreats, a trip to OK for Memorial Day, and a conference in Minnesota! During that three week stretch I was only in the office 4 days and home for 7! Now life has somewhat normalized, but we are leaving for CO on Wednesday the 27th for 10 days. I am super excited but that deadline is also when we have to be packed up because we are moving to another house on campus the day we return from the mountains.

All that to say, the blog has been sitting not in the backseat but the trunk (that is legal in Cali I think). My hope is to upload a buttload of pics this weekend so check back to see everything from OK pics, to Caleb walking, eating, getting into trouble, etc.

I will also hopefully be able to chronicle some of our adventures pre Colorado, then post, once we return. Until then, thanks for your patience!

Getting Into Everything

Caleb is walking, thus mom and dad are now chasing! He is into everything and getting into it much more quickly now. It is fascinating to watch him walk so fast that he is almost running. I've always said that he will go from walking to running very quickly, and I think that is proving to be true. He is also taking after his dad and hitting plastic golf balls with plastic clubs...at 13 MONTHS!!! There are a few new pictures in the album on the left. Make sure to check them out.

We have been quite busy as of late. Two weekends ago, I surprised Tara and Caleb by taking them to CO with me on a trip for APU. We stayed a long weekend at our condo. It was so great! I have never been to CO in May, and it was so beautiful. The mountains still had snow on them, but all the trees were in bloom, and the temps were perfect! If you haven't been, you should check it out sometime. Life hasn't slowed down, as I'm off to a work retreat for two days. Then on Saturday, we fly to OK for a long Memorial weekend where Tara's folks are coming to vist. Both families will be together for a big cookout on Monday. I'm then back at work for two days before leaving for a four day conference. Pretty crazy times! June should be slower and then we are back to CO for our annual summer trip during the 4th of July week. More on that to come at a later date.

I think that brings you up to speed. Caleb and Tara are doing great. He is growing up so fast now it is unbelievable. Family, check your email as I am going to email a picture of him that "aunt Carrie Strawn" thought wasn't Internet worthy, and I agree. But it definitely is emailing to family worthy!

Sorry for the hiatus

It has been a crazy bit of time since the last post. Both Pepperdine and APU graduated on consecutive weeks. Then Tara went to Europe to be trained on leading teams of student leaders around some historical places for 8 days. During that time, my parents came out to visit and take care of Caleb, but unfortunately, Tara had the camera. Now we are back to somewhat normal life and I have put up a bunch of pictures in the online album on the left. Make sure to check them out. There are some new pics of Caleb in the photo album on the left. There are two of his worst injury to date. He rolled down a small hill in our courtyard onto a concrete retaining wall and skinned his head and got a bump on his eye. I felt bad because I was right there next to him but couldn't catch him fast enough...

More to come soon. Tara will be gone to Europe next week and my parents will be in from OK. I'm sure to get some great pics with the grandparents.

What Has This World Come To?

This week has been a little overwhelming, and not for the reasons most would say. For me, it has overwhelmed me at the current state of our the media. I have been rolling these thoughts over in my head for a few years now, and this week has put a final stamp on something that disturbs me greatly.

I have always been told, "Don't believe everything you hear on the radio or see on the TV, or now, read on the internet", but today I think it goes further than that. The tragedy that impacted those at Va. Tech this week struck too close to home, as I work on a college campus. And I will admit, I, too, thought about how we would handle something like this. However, what is rubbing me the wrong way is the nature of how the media has reacted to the whole situation.

I was actually at home sick on Monday so I fell into the trap of watching the 'Breaking News' coverage all day. It wasn't 3 hours removed from the event that media personalities were trying to lead those they interviewed into the trap of saying someone was to blame, other than the disturbed shooter. I don't know how many times questions were asked to random students along the lines of, "Would you have done things differently if you got the email earlier?" or "Don't you wish the campus would have been locked down sooner, if at all?" Again, THREE hours after the events, before the victims were even out of the classrooms, these were the questions. Funny enough the students and faculty/staff didn't walk headlong into the trap, as many of them responded with something like, "I think it was handled pretty well."

Next there was some media and many parents calling for the president and chief of police at Va. Tech to step down. Again, that wasn't today at the end of a week, that was Monday afternoon! Why are we so quick to find blame these days. The media has many times been accused of being vultures, well I contend they are glorified ambulance chasers. Sadly enough many of the reasons for this are that our society is so enamored with sensationalism, that is what sells.

The final blow came Wednesday, when NBC aired the mulitmedia materials of the killer. This really concerned me then, and more now because they, in their attempt to provide the public with their "need to know" glorified this killer and gave him exactly what he wanted! A world-wide forum for his actions. This same network will not show a streaker running across a baseball, football, or soccer field as not to glorify those actions, but it will air the rants of a killer. All in the name of the news! The media needs a gut check. How about reporting for good ole reporting sake, and not playing to the almighty dollar or sensationalizing the stories. How about some sensitivity instead of the bottom line. How about trying to at least seem unbiased, like they were in the old days, even though there is always a slant.

I was alway taught to take a step back and think before making decisions. It is interesting now how many media outlets are not showing the video anymore, because time and criticism have shown how idiotic that decision was in the first place, all because of the scoop! It was a sad day on Monday for reasons that should have directly surrounded those hurting across the nation. The media made it much worse and continues to do so.

Caleb is 1!

Caleb turned one on Friday and we had quite the eventful weekend! On his birthday, we went to the Santa Barbara zoo. It is a smaller zoo, but it was perfect for Caleb. First, he LOVES birds and this zoo has birds everywhere, inside and outside of cages. Second, it has large lawns on which he could play. He really liked the animals but would rather gaze at the birds and crawl around the grass and on the statues. There are many pictures uploaded in the album to the left.

That night Tara's parents were coming to town for the big party on Saturday. However, before the arrived, the other set of grandparents showed up as a surprise! My mom and dad came in around 6:30 on Friday night. We had no idea they were coming! It was so nice to have them in town. It was great having both sets of grandparents at his party.

Saturday brought the great 1st birthday party! We decided to do a sports theme. We had plates, napkins and tablecloths of balls. We also had three cakes matching the theme. We bought the big cake, but Tara made the smaller two cakes and decorated them. They were perfect. We had many friends and family over and had a super time! Honestly, though, I don't know where we are going to put all his new toys in our small place! :) He now has trucks and trains and dinosaurs and big block legos, just to name a few along with many new books (which we are happy for because we are getting tired of reading the same 10 over and over again :)

All in all it was a great weekend. Caleb was exhausted on Saturday night and slept until 9:30 Sunday morning. It was a fun time.

Is It Hot In Here Or Is It Just Me?

One thing that irks me more than anything is when people overly politicize issues. A prime example of this can be found in the Boston Globe: Turf wars heat up: grass vs. synthetic. All the rage right now is about global warming. Given, Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" is a pretty compelling documentary. However, I'm not ready to hold my breath and ask all humans to do so when walking outside so we don't exhale greenhouse gases. This story is about a battle between local high schools and opponents regarding the field on which sports teams will play their games. The high schools want to switch to the trendy sports turf that so many other pro/college/high schools/ and Texas grade schools are switching to.

The opponents, obviously not getting enough traction or support have brought in the 10 ton guerrilla to the argument...Global Warming...dun dun dunnnnnnn. They claim that artificial fields will actually lead to global warming because the temperatures on artificial fields are much warmer than grass fields, thus deflecting higher temps into the atmosphere! Now I do not need to overstate my opinion here as I know most of my readers are on the same page (recycled paper, just to clarify) with me. What the heck does global warming have to do with playing high school football? Where will its reach end? If the sacred grid iron isn't safe neither are we. O.k. talk amongst yourselves...

There are new pics in the album to your left. Check out the great park we found for Caleb. It is all just his size and he loves it! Caleb is now standing by himself and stringing a few steps together, but still not walking. He prefers to crawl and we are happy about that, because once he walks we will have to get a leash! :) Less than two weeks and he will be 1. Crazy!

Caleb turned 11 months this week. One month to go and he will have a real number for an age. Pretty crazy how fast this year has gone! A few months ago, Caleb wasn't too much into books, but within the past 4 weeks, he LOVES them. Every night we read at least 5 board books to him before bed. He really likes them. What is crazy is that he already has books he likes and doesn't like. AND pages he likes and doesn't like. We skip over those pages so he doesn't get too distracted. The book I'm reading in this picture is one of the ones he doesn't like. We only read it once a week.

New pictures are in the album on the left. Make sure to check them out. This one is a favorite as he fell asleep while eating! I don't really know how you can do that, but when nap time comes, it comes with authority! He is finally beginning to sleep better. He is only waking once a night now and sleeping in 5-6 hour stints! Much improvement from his 2-3 hour times for the past 10 months. Also, he is taking longer naps and more closely on schedule. This is helpful as we plan our days. Knowing when he needs a nap is good because before, there wasn't a schedule so we couldn't do much.

Soon there will be some pictures of Caleb at the park. We have discovered a super park through the canyon about 15 minutes from our house. It has a whole play area just for one year olds. Basically everything is shrunk down to his size and he LOVES it! We plan to go there often now, and I'm sure we'll get some great pics.

Some things don't need much description

I got this picture forwarded to me with the heading, "This Year's 'Not My Job' Award". I find it pretty funny because how common this is in life. This picture simply is a great visual of how many times people simply go around problems rather than fix them. Don't get me wrong, I am not an enabler and technically this isn't the striper's job, but sometimes you have to stop what you are doing and move the plank before going on. Hmm, removing the plank...I've heard that somewhere before.

Progressive isn't always better

Having a child leads one to notice things once overlooked. Like today's story on MSN about child care centers receiving low grades. I understand that in many areas the midwest, and the mideast get the short end of the stick. The progressive states on the coasts often get the publicity and therefore are often thought of as better.

When it comes to child care, there really isn't a standard as the map above shows. My home state of OK graded out well, while my home state of CA didn't do so well. Now I know that part of that comes with numbers and the criteria, but the fact is that progressive states, aren't always better, but also, smaller states who are often thought of as 'family oriented' are better either. Look at Kansas and Nebraska for instance.

I am happy that currently we are able to juggle work, with a few college babysitters, friends and family and not have to send Caleb to daycare. That is one huge blessing! The idea of daycare has never really sat right with me, but for a large majority out there, there is no other choice. Our economy has moved, like it or not to a dual income model, particularly in the 'progressive' coastal cities. I wonder just how progressive dual income families really are in the end.

It has been a month between updates and there is much to update! Shortly after the last post we took our annual January ski vacation to our condo in CO. We went with the same crew as last year, minus Dan and Lynnea, but adding Scott, Cambra and Will Strawn, and Grandma and Grandpa Mize, to help babysit! We had a great time as always in beautiful Summit County. Like last year we went to three places, Keystone, Vail and Breckenridge. I would categorize the trip for Chuck, Heather, Michael and me with one word...jumping! I know I have never jumped so much on skis. We were in the air A LOT and some of us failed to land many times. I'm hoping to get a hard copy of one of the most amazing jumps/landing EVER. Stay tuned...

Good thing is nobody got injured. We had a great trip. The photo album on the left has some newly added pics from out trip. After we got back to Cali, Tara and I hit the ground running as we began the selection process for next years student leaders in our offices. The past three weeks have been spent interviewing and selecting leaders. Mix in to that a 24 hour stomach flu that all three of us came down with and it was a busy time, working, going to the doctor, the pharmacy and sick in bed! We are all healthy now, but during the past week, Caleb had what I would call his first injury. He was crawling around in the bathroom and while trying to pull himself up on the wall, slipped and hit his face on the metal stopper for our shower door. There are a few new pics in the album showing his big scrape! He actually bled for a little bit, and cried for longer. It was sad, but he falls so much now it is becoming common place. Tara and I are definitely in trouble and foresee many trips to the emergency room in his life time!

In the photo album, you will also see Caleb eating his first apple. Tara was eating it initially, but he crawled over stood up and insisted on taking a bite. That bite led to him commendeering the apple for himself! He LOVED it. This weekend, Grandma Mize came down for the long weekend. It is great to have her here as Tara and I are able to get away a bit for movies and such. Also, it has been nice because Caleb has been teething all week. He now has two more teeth to show for it, but like his other teething experiences, he doesn't sleep well. Tara and I were exhausted by Friday, so having someone around to help over the weekend has been a lifesaver!

Christmas in OK (and CO, NM, and TX)

Caleb's first Christmas was an adventure to say the least. The trip started off meeting the immediate Houston family in CO at our condo. It was the first time I had all my family together in the mountains at our condo. My sister Lacy, her husband Brian, my brother Mitchell and his wife Krista, my cousin Staci, Tara and I took advantage of the grandparents and babysitting and skied at Copper Mountain!
We also had a day to take Caleb and his cousin Cole (who is 5 months and a day younger) sledding. Cole went down the hill once with his dad and then slept the rest of the time. Caleb enjoyed a few rides down the hill but then liked sitting in the snow and playing with it. At one point, he bent over and with mouth opened wide, put his whole face in the white stuff. He was trying to figure it out and came up face covered in fresh powder, and LOVING it!

Tuesday came time for the family to leave, but we didn't have a flight until Wednesday. Well, Wednesday, as many of you know, brought one of the top 3 blizzards to Denver. Needless to say, we barely got to our friends, Niall and Jen's house before the roads closed at noon and proceeded to spend the next 30 hours snowed in with 2-3 feet of snow falling before the roads opened again. Because the airport was closed we couldn't get a flight out until Sunday. >The problem with that was that we were supposed to be in Texas on Friday night. Thus, as soon as the roads opened south, we drove to Oklahoma, through New Mexico. Because the hotels were all full in NM and TX we drove 12 hours through the night arriving Friday morning on the farm in OK.

Mom and dad went in and handed Caleb to the grandparents and got 4 hours of sleep before jumping back in the car and heading down to Texas for an early Christmas with the Houston's! Yes it was 16 hours in the car that day and needless to say, Caleb didn't want to be in a car the rest of the trip.

The newly uploaded pictures in the photo album on the left show some of the TX pics. It was great having the whole family together in TX. 35 plus were there, all but two. We had a nice brunch and gift exchange before hanging out on Saturday. It was then back to OK for Christmas on the farm.

Caleb loved the farm house. He learned how to walk around corners of tables, and staying on the farm wouldn't be complete without getting his first gun :) It of course is a Red Rider bee bee gun but grandpa Houston already has two: one for Caleb and one for Cole.

The rest of the time was spent hanging out in OK city with family and friends. All in all it was a super trip. Caleb traveled great, even the 16 hours in the car was as good as possible. Of course he was a hit with the flight attendants on the plane and the other passengers because he is just so social. We returned to Cali on New Years day just in time to watch the amazing Boise St. vs. OU game. Now life is back to 'normal', whatever that is. Caleb turned nine months earlier in January. We are now preparing for next week's second annual ski vacation to CO with our friends from all over, Malibu, San Jose, CA, and Baltimore, MD. It will be a great time!

The Sky is Falling

I have told many people during my time here in southern CA that if it ever snowed in LA we would know the world was coming to an end. Well it did snow in Malibu and WEST LA today, but as far as I can tell, we are still here. Yes you read that right...it SNOWED in Malibu. No it was real snow, not the soap bubbles that Disney and every other 'outdoor shopping' center uses to imitate snow. It was the real white stuff that you can see in the pictures. Fires a couple weeks ago, sub freezing nights this week, topped off by snow today. I don't know if it can get any crazier!
